Poses 101: Spine Curls
Spine Curls are a fantastic exercise with many benefits including; improving spinal articulation, activating and strengthening the hamstrings and abs, and lengthening hip flexors.
Sequential spinal movement is a key characteristic of many of the Pilates mat work and exercises. It is a movement that requires the spine to move one vertebra by vertebra, articulating from the bottom to the top of the spine.
It is a great exercise for all abilities to mobilise the spine and hip joints whilst strengthening the back, abdominals and glutes and backs of the legs.
Lack of body awareness and stiffness can limit movement which is why working more slowly, using your breath to break down the movement can help and over time you will see the benefits this exercise can bring.
Exercises like the Spine Curl helps to balance the front and back of the body through building in strength and flexibility it also helps to restore spinal mobility, and can benefit your postural realignment.
I use Spine Curls with nearly all beginners, as it’s a great spinal warm up and brings strength and balance to the body.
