5 Tips to Build Lasting Habits

Most people wait until the New Year to start their goals. Adding one new habit now, gives you a head start so you can create meaningful changes that last far beyond the “new year, new me” hype. Whether you’re looking to feel stronger, take better care of yourself, or simply make life a little more balanced, these five tips are here to guide you toward lasting habits that actually fit into your life (and feel good!).

Start Small

Big goals can feel exciting at first, but they can also leave you overwhelmed and ready to quit when life gets busy. Instead, focus on small, manageable changes that are easy to stick to.

For example, if your goal is to start moving your body more, commit to just 10 minutes of Pilates a day. That’s it. Once you’ve nailed that, you can gradually increase the time or frequency.

Focus on Consistency Over Perfection

Spoiler alert: You don’t need to be perfect. Missed a workout? No problem. Habits are built through consistency, not a streak of perfection.

The goal is to keep showing up, even when you don’t feel like it. Remember, a 5-minute stretch on a busy day is better than skipping your Pilates practice altogether.

Reward Yourself

Who doesn’t love a little incentive? Pair your new habit with something you enjoy to keep the process fun and rewarding. For example:

  • After completing a Pilates class, treat yourself to a cup of your favourite tea.

  • Stuck to your habit for a week? Take a trip to your favourite coffee shop, or watch a trashy TV show. Something that’s special to you!

Get an Accountability Partner

You don’t have to do it alone! Having someone in your corner—whether it’s a friend, partner, or even a Pilates instructor—can make a world of difference. Share your goals with someone who can gently nudge you when motivation wanes and celebrate your wins with you.

Cultivate a Positive Mindset

Your mindset matters more than you think. If you’re constantly telling yourself you “can’t” do something, it’s no surprise when you feel stuck. Shift your focus to what you can do and how great you’ll feel when you stick with it.

When things get tough, remind yourself why you started. Visualise how you’ll feel when you’ve built this habit into your life—a little stronger, more confident, and more in control of your wellbeing.
